IRELAND MEDITATION MINE

Allihies, Ireland |2022

Inspired by Tibetan monasteries perched on Himalayan slopes, this project centers on Buddhist sanctuary architecture with three key zones. The Copper Village, situated at the lower slopes, serves as a retreat where one can rest before embarking on a spiritual journey. The guesthouses are positioned near a small lake, offering views of the ocean and the valley. Oxidized copper cladding on the façades symbolizes minerals hidden within the earth, as if emerging from the depths of the hills. The Public Center and Museum, located on the mid-slope, are nestled among the rocks. From here, there is a view of an abandoned engine room ruin. The museum’s exhibits focus on the history of the copper mine. In the evenings, a mapping projection on the building’s roof recreates the operation of steam-powered lifting mechanisms. The "Ashram" area at the upper part of the slope represents the sanctuary. This wellness center includes yoga and meditation rooms, as well as a gym. A notable feature of the building is the upper terrace, which features an observation deck and a heated swimming pool.
